  • ssn /license for visitors ?

    Hi All,

1 . My parents have come to stay with us for 3-4 months in Illinois. I wonder if they can apply for SSN and further apply and get a driving license ?

    2. I was wondering if the my father who is already more than 65, eligible for illinois free transit for seniors. He would love to travel around chicago and suburbs where Metra-pace service is available. I am reffering to this scheme : http://www.rtachicago.com/CMS400Min/index.asp?id=630

    3. Does any one have information on any programs for people to see places in chicago or state - IL. I wish if there are some programs which would help my parents see and enjoy places in Illinois - like a week or 2 weeks tour..or altleast chicago explore like in NY we have buses which take you to major places...

Also let me know if I can write '3' in some other section to get better responses.

    Thanks...

    1. No SSN. IL issues temporary DL for anyone that has an I-94 valid for more than 1 year. Hence they don't qualify for that as well as a visitor. They can use International DL. Insurance rates will be high.

    2. Yes. Thanks to Blagojevich. How long this will last and if CTA will have the money to run is yet to be seen.

    3. Downtown has plenty of tour operators in Chicago. They have bus tours, river boat tours, shoreline tours etc. They are not free as they are run by private operators.

Megabus operates between Chicago and St. Louis and charges like $1 for a trip if booked well in advance.

Many other sources for tourist information

For such information you can refer to standard guidebooks like Lonely Planet USA guide or the Wikitravel chapter for the city. If you still need more info this may be considered:
