Urgent regarding in Port of entry

Hi My mother-in-law will be coming here to USA on Wednesday.She mentioned as 3 months in 156 form.Can she say here in immigration that she want to stay for 5 months or she needs to say only 3 months as mentioned in DS-156.Any info on this would be helpful.

Even my inlaws have mentioned 3 months in 156 form. When they came to US 2 weeks before, during immigration they told 5 months and got I-94 for 6 months.
