I was reading the FAQs on the VFS site

Question 37 is where I am confused... below is the question.

My visitor visa (B1/B2) expires after my intended date of arrival in the US. Do I need to get a new visa before departure?

You can arrive in the US right up to the last date of validity indicated on the visa. The Immigration Officer on arrival determines the duration of stay in the US. Your visa can expire while you are still in the US - just ensure that you do not overstay the period permitted by the Immigration Officer.

I am applying for Visitor visa for my Mother. Say she only gets a 3 months visa from july to Sept. and she visit US in Sept. So can the officer allow her to stay beyond Visa expiry in Sept. ie will she get I94 beyond Sept??? or I94 is only issued till the last day of Visa expiration?

-- No. You cannot as a visa is always issued outside the U.S.

    -- Yes

or I94 is only issued till the last day of Visa expiration?
    -- No

--Usually the I-94 is valid 6 months for B2. The visa expiration date does not matter. If the visa will expire tomrrow, one can enter today. The stay in the U.S. is determined by the I-94 date, given by the officer at POE.

      thanks a ton

      One more question...
what is the duration the visa is usually issued? Is there any minimum duration? like 3 month, I know the max is 10 years multiple and every visit max 6 months?

I know about the I94... which depends on the immigration officer at port of entry...

I want to know the minimum duration the Visa is issued.
(i do not if I am quoting the question correctly, please ask me if this does not make sense)

Usually, a B2 visa is issued for 10 years (I assume India). It could be less though. My parents got 10 yr.
