Passport expires in six months after I-94 date. Can tourist visa be extended?

Hi. My MIL's passport expires in Apr 2009. She's here on a tourist visa. Her I-94 expires Sep 17 2008. We plan to file for an extension in August. Will she be granted approval to extend her stay, considering that she has just 6-7 months validity after the I-94 expiration? If so, how many months are typically granted, and when would be the ideal time to apply?

Your application will be considered on it's own merit not on the passport's expiration date.
