  • Visitor Visa-Self Sponsor

    Hello

My mother in law is planning to visit US for tourism purpose and also to attend my husband's graduation. My husband is on F1. And I am on F1-OPT.
So we thought it would be better that if she sponsoers herself. She is retired, and getting pension. She is planning to show around 12000 USD - Cash as deposit. We have a doubt whether that amount is enough.

Or else do you suggest us to cosponsor her.

I will appreciate if anybody give us some suggestions

Guess it is a problem, cause you cannot sponsor and her income is not enough to self sponsor.
For self sponsorship they look at the income and not just deposits.

Can't you wait to bring her till one of you has a job? Because she is risking a denial in the current situation.

What about her husband? Does she have any children living in INdia?

      Lady,
It is better if your mother-in-law self sponsors her visiting visa as you two are on F1 status.
I have done the same in April 2005 to attend the graduation ceremony of my son.
Though I had prepared well with all relevant documents, the VO did not see any of them. He only felt that I have ties in my country, asked me 3 questions and one to my Mrs.She was asked how many children she has? She immediately replied that he is the only son. We got the visa.
The story is establish your roots/Ties in your home country and get the visa. Of course, some time luck also favours. Good Luck.

I've had my parents visit me for graduation and all I sent them was an invite from the school. They self sponsored the trip but I had around 6k in balance in my account at that time which did not matter much.

The key is for them to prove ties to the home country. Sponsorship has very little to nothing to do with the visa approval.

          Mr Peace,
What you have stated is very true to the context. But the son or daughter would like his/her parents to attend the graduation and the parents will be very happy to attend and bless the child.
In fact when we attended the graduation of my son, we felt that we were on top of Himalayas.
So, I suggested the self sponsor route and seconded by txh1b. Thanks.

Is the invitation sent by you or by the school. If it is from school, who has sent the invitation. Can you please guide me on that.

The school issued the invite and a letter saying that I am graduating and would love to have them here. That is pretty much it. They took care of papers for property evaluation etc but were never asked for anything at the consulate. I guess it is a matter of luck rather than anything else.
