Is it possible to change status from a visitor to a student (student visa) whilst in the US? My daughter originally entered the US as a visitor and was granted 6 months (expired Jan. 02, 2009) and would like to start studying. She is currently in New Jersey.

It is possible but if it gets denied it is messy with overstay, B2 cancellation. Better route is to go for a visa stamping with the I-20 to another country or home country.

Nowadays (after 9/11) USCIS requires prospective students entering on B2/B1 visas to notify the POE officer of their intentions and the officer will decide and stamp their I-94 forms accordingly...
If they do not, a change of status from B to F1 would risk to be denied.
