  • Fathers Visitor Visa

    Hello,

We just sent the paper work for my fathers visitors visa. My husband sent the sponser paperwork for him.

My father has passport valid for 20 years. Mostly the passports are issued for 10 years and since he got it for 20 years, i was wondering if that will be a problem during visa interview?

Apart from the sponsors documets + other forms as neeeded ,what other paperwork should he carry in order to make sure he doesnt miss any vital information from his side during interview. I will soon take appointment for him. Can someone soon answer this question please.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think your dad would face any issues with his 20 years valid passport. You can check this https://www.immihelp.com/usa-visitor...tor-documents/ for more information about all your questions. Please check the last section regarding information about 20 years validity passports.

      Fathers Visitor Visa

Thank you for the reply. I did go over the 20 years passport validity at " https://www.immihelp.com/usa-visas/v...sitordocs.html ".

It says in March,2004 Govt Of India suggested to change 20 yrs valid passport to 10 years to avoid confusion during travdelling abroad-In this case is it recommemeded to convert it into 10 years validity as it also says that the service will be done for free. Not sure if "free" still prevails as it is more than 10 years since that rule was passed.

In that case IF service isnt free, what should be the best approach and who should be contacted and how? Please advise.

      Thanks in advance.

        Indian Passport ...

... is issued under the name of the President of India a document is honored and accepted throughout the world.

If the passport is valid for 20 years, it will be honored for 20 years, no matter what.

There is no such that that "most documents are for 10 year period ..." etc.

You need to show more confidence in the most important document of the country and you should defend it.

        Good luck.

The passport will be updated free of charge and your dad will be given a new 10 year passport. There were some cases where the US CBP thought that the 20 year passports were fraudulent and took people into custody.

It took a while for the Indian authorities in US to respond and validate that the passports were truly issued by the Indian government. This resulted in the person spending couple of nights in detention which I feel sorry for due to slow response.

At that time, the authorities announced that they will maintain a 10 year standard like all other countries. You should get the passport changed. The visas still remain valid.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

            Thanks for the reply.

My father does want to convert his 20 years valid passport to 10 years to avoid any future problems. What will be the best way to get that done? I know it will be done free of cost but whom to contact and how to go about. Please suggest.
