Can I sponsor my parents-in-law even if my wife is currently on H-1B

My wife and myself are currently on H-1B visas. Can I sponsor my parents-in-law for a Visitor Visa (providing only my pay stubs, W2's etc) even if my wife is also on H-1B? Will the consulate officer ask why my wife hasn't directly sponsored her parents?

Doesn't matter. Sponsorship is not mandatory for a visitor visa. They qualify on their own merit and financial ties to home country. It is just an additional means to show support for the trip expenses.
