Is it necessary to travel to US immediately after visa?

My mom got her visa (2nd time) for 10 years last month. She is planning to come here again in Jan 05. Is it essential to travel within a certain timeframe after getting the visa ?

If one is granted a 6 month visitor visa, my understanding is that one can travel anytime in the next six months and can stay as long as the time one is granted at the port of entry. Am I correct ?

In that case, does it matter if the visa expires during one's stay in the USA, since one has the permit granted at port of entry?
