hi,
i've been accepted to work on a voluntary work programme in nevada, i was told by the people that the work has been organised through that i could travel on a tourist visa since i was doing unpaid work.
i rang up the us consulate in london to check that i could indeed do this and was told that i needed to apply for a B1 visa and had to prove, among other things, that i was part of a charitable or religous organisation in the uk.
the thing is, the work im doing isnt charitable or religous, its conservation work and i'm doing it for life experience since i've recently finished university and wanted to do something before working for the rest of my life!.
on the embassy's website is suggests that if the voluntary work i'm doing doesnt match the requirements of the B1 visa i should consider the H or J visas...but neither of these visas seem to fit my needs, since i am not doing temporary paid work and i'm not on an exchange programme.
i was hoping someone could advise me as to what i should do, do you think maybe the person on the phone got their wires crossed when i mentioned voluntary work and maybe i should elaborate on the work and organization i will be working with over there?
thanks for any advice you can give!
