US Visitor Visa expiring soon

Dear Sir/Madam,

My mother's visitor visa expires on June 10th 2009. If she comes in May 2009 and the immigration officer at port of entry allows her to stay for period of 3 months - what she should do if she needs to stay beyond 3 months?

Is it better to let the visa expire and apply for fresh visa after June 10th or can she apply for extension after coming here in May?

If applying for fresh visa, can she submit the application for new/fresh visa before the current visa expires?

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have one last question.

If my mother decides/wants to travel after her current visa expires(after June 10th in this case), can she submit application for new visa before the expiration of current visa or she has to wait till June 10th ? In other words, can she start the process (submit application and schedule interview) for new visa of same type, in anticipation of future travel and before the expiration of current visa?
