Is Invitation Letter a must

I see in your site the need for an invitation letter, just wanted to make sure that this is very important.

Also if my in laws are visiting us and we will also be travelling with them to various parts of the country what is the best given reason for the trip.

Is it bad to just say "visiting family" or is it better to say
Visit Family and tourism.

Visitor Tourist-

I have a affidavit od support that I would take care of my in-laws with 1000 $/month per person during the stay in US.

We are also going to be travelling with them to various places in the country.

My questions:

a) is the 1000 $/month enough to convince the visa officer.

b) You mentioned "Tourism" is better, but they are also going to stay with us for sometime.
Moreover the period of stay is 6 months, how will the visa officer think that 6 months is necessary for this.

c) can;t we say "Tourism and Spend Time with Daughter's Family"

2. Tourism does not necessarily mean touring every single day in six months. Read www.immihelp.com/docs/poeletter.html why they need longer stay.
All the officers in India clearly understand that when old people go to US, they are not going to stay in hotel, roam around every single day from day to night and then come back as soon as possible.
