birth certificates

I was confused about our birth certificates to be sent to my parents for their visitor visa. My questions are:

1. Do we have to send my husband's and my original birth certificates to our parents as a part of the application papers for their visitor visa?

2. If not original, can we have copies of our birth certificates notarized?
