didn't reseive "receipt" from USCIS after my white card expired

Hello, my friend applied to extend his B1/B2 visa 3 weeks before his white card expired. It is 5 days after that date and he still didn't receive a receipt.
Is it any way he can find out if the USCIS has his documents, did they get them? just to make sure that everything is OK.

Did he send it by certified mail? He can call USCIS and check receipt. If not received he needs to send the application again asap or leave the country.

his layer sent all the documents, she is out of town, so we cant check how did she send it. He has all the copies. Will it be ok if we'll call to USCIS??? one more thing he wants to cruise with the person who invited him in the beginning of June. they already bought tickets and all the stuff. Can he ask the USCIS officer to get the answer before that time? or there is no way to do it sooner?
