At the consulate? Documents?

My parents will be applying at Mumbai COnsulate, India.

I was wondering, if the consulate keep any documents with them Sponsor or applicant?. I mean DO they return all document or they keep some?

If Yes, which ones?

They only take DS-156 application form. They return everything else.
