Visa validity

Hi,

My in-laws are planning to go for Visa (B2) on Sep 20th. They would like to come to USA some time end of December or Early Jan and stay for 6 months. If Visa approved on Sep 20th and for 6 months, is that mean their I-94 IN december will be for remainder of 3 months or will they get 6 months.

What is the procedure????
