when to apply?

me and my wife will be going to india in dec.-jan......we plan to apply for my in-laws visitor visa at that time so that we can guide them on how to prepare and appear for interview.....is that a good idea or should we do that before we go?will our presence there be a negative point as VO might say that since ur children are here now,why do u want 2 visit US?anyone did the same?thanks in advance
