inviting parents while F2 expired

I am currently on OPT working for a state agency as programmer. Mine and my wife's visa (F2) has already expired a year back. Now we are planing to invite my in laws for visiting. Do we need to show VO that we applied for visa extension? i heard this in some forums. is that true? How hard it is getting visa for inlaws while our visas expired and while on OPT?

Its the stamp that is expired, We both are in legal status all the time. I am on OPT right now.

If you are in legal status now, that is all that matters. You don't need valid visa stamp in your passport.
