Transit Visa - Frankfurt

I have 2 questions:

1. My family made a trip to India from Feb to Apr 2009. They came back to US on Travel document. We are planning to make another trip to India
next month. Is it ok to travel just after 6 months. Will there be any problem while coming back?

2. We are planning to travel through Frankfurt. I am aware that we need trasit visa as our US visa has expired. Please let me know the where can I get the transit visa ?

1. Your AP should be valid as per the original date printed on it by USCIS not the stamp at the airport which will say valid until xyz date.

I have one question. I am living in a city far from Houston. Is it advisable to apply for Transit visa through mail because we will be sending passports etc.

How long will it take ?
