Visitor visa to permanent resident

Hi,

I am US citizen. I want to apply for visitor visa for my parents for now and after few years I want to apply for green card so that they can stay here for long time. Is it possible that I can apply for green card when they are having visitor visa? When should I apply? HOw many years I have to wait to apply for green card while they are having visitor visa? Which form I have to use to apply for green card? Is it possible to adjust the status?
