Waiting on application acceptance

I am applying for a visa extension. If leave the US before I receive acceptance or denial of my request but after my visa has expired, what will I have to show at the airport to let them know that I am still pending acceptance rather than overstaying my visa?

You just submit your I-94 at the airport and that's it.
