Questions regarding vistor's visa

Hello, I hope you can give me some advice.

I am an American citizen and I have friend who is also an American who is visiting his fiance in China. He plans to bring her here to visit his family, but has asked me to act as his fiance's sponsor.

He gave my name to a lawyer who emailed me asking for my tax forms going back several years, for pay stubs and for my social security number--all information that I'm not comfortable giving out to a stranger!

I noticed on your webpage https://www.immihelp.com/usa-visitors-visa-sponsor-documents/ which referred to obtaining such information from family members, not from strangers.

Can you let me know if this request for information is legitimate, or might this "lawyer" be attempting to take me (and possibly my friend) for a ride?

Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can sponsor anyone, not just family members.

If you want to sponsor someone, you should be willing to provide the documents mentioned at https://www.immihelp.com/usa-visitors-visa-sponsor-documents/ If you are not comfortable providing them, you should decline sponsoring them.
