Good to see your response. I am thinking of asking my mom to get an affidavit done giving clarification. Let me see how it works. I am trying to call up the Helpdesk at the Chennai consulate too.

Anyway, the quick response in this website is really great. It makes me feel comfortable to know that there is someone to clarify the doubts anytime. Thank you very much.

      1. No need for affidavits. Consulate has seen thousands of cases like this before (no surname) and know very well how to handle this.

      2. You are welcome. We are glad that this web site was helpful to you.
Please spread the good word and tell all your friends and family about this web site.

          Hello all

I called up the VFS helpline number and after several attempts was able to talk to a representative. I told him that my mother's last name is entered as LNU. He told that a new DS 160 should be filled in and we should take 2 confirmation pages, i.e. earlier form with LNU and the new form with FNU and explain at the time of the interview.

I am going to do that. This is just for the information of all.

No Surname in Passport ?? not a problem

              Hello folks..

I am in united states from 2008

I have the same thing... my surname is blank on passport.

NOW. if you have your name written in Given names or somewhere else, while filling the forms write down your complete in name in surname box and given name remains FNU.

As I said my surname is blank on passport. when embassy issued me a visa they put my full name in surname and they put FNU in the given names box

DONT PANIC. It's not a big deal.. visa officers deal with this thing everyday

                Surname blank Confirmation

                Hi Immihelp,
From this post, I understand, if surname is blank in passport, we need to use Given Name(s) in passpost to fill Surname in DS160 and Given Names as FNU

                Passport Info :
                Surname :
                Given Name (s): Name1 Name2

                While Filling DS160:
                Surname : Name1 Name2
                Given Names: FNU

Immihelp Could you please confirm, if above is correct?

                Thanks

                    Hi All,
I was happy that for me one problem got resolved, (my mom's passport has only Given name and not surname), but when I entered the Given name in Surname box, it didnt accept it as my mom's given name has three names. The message I got was something like this "Correct your Surname as two spaces are not accepted".

                    In my mom's passport:
                    Surname:
                    Given name: Name1 Name2 Name3

I tried putting "Name1 Name2 Name3" in Surname box of DS160, and I got that message. Someone please help, as what I need to do now?

                    Thanks,

                      Issue of FNU.. Please help..

                      Hi,

As many of H1B visa aspirants, i too have the issue of FNU. In my passport my name is given as Given Name : **** **** and Surname is blank.
From many of earlier posts i found that we can change name in passport and solve the issue, But for me visa is already approved and
i am going for stamping. From the passport office i came to know that endorsement in the passport is not encouraged in india now and they will
only re issue a new passport with the changed name.
So i am not sure whether it will have any impact on my visa stamping if i go for name change in passport by getting it reissued.
Or can i go with only given name?. But from other post i found that having FNU in visa may sometime create issue in getting SSN or Driving license.
Please give me a suggestion. Anxiously waiting for your response.

                      Thanks,
                      Sony.

Other names used - No surname

In the past, my name was just SAHANA. A few years back I changed it to include my father's surname. Now my name is SAHANA VADWA.

In DS-160, for the question "Have you ever used other names (i.e., maiden, religious, professional, alias, etc.)?" should I check on Yes or No?
If yes, since I did not use any surname in the past, what should I fill?

The portal does not accept blank space for 'Other surnames used' and 'Other given names used' option.

This is a concern for me because my degree certificates have the name as SAHANA. Please help!

                              Hi Rafiq,

I have the same issue. Given name has Name1 Name2 Name3 in the Indian passport.

I haven't yet filled up the DS 160, so haven't seen the error message, but how did you then resolve this issue?

Most names tend to be name1 name2 on the sites I have researched, so your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
