Visitor visa for 4 year old with separated parents

hello guys,

I want to apply visitor visa for my niece (4 years old). Her mom already has a visitor visa but never visited US. The mom is separated from her husband but not yet divorced.

I have heard that both parents have to be present for a minor child's appointment - now that the parents are separated - what are the issues with only one being present?

Do we need to show proof of separation of parents etc? Thnx.
