Transit visa for UK in case US visa stamp not on PP

My L1 is expired, but have the approved extension copy of work permit, now while travelling back to india via british airways i believe its a problem.

So has anyone faced this problem and is the transit visa a solution for this?
And what are the things to get this visa and what else to be taken care?

Please help asap.
