extension of Duration of Stay on Visitor visa

Hi,

My mother is here on visitor's visa and her 6 month duration of stay will end in about 7 weeks. She has a 10 yr visa and this is her second visit to the US. We are considering extending her stay for one more month, but would like to know if this could have any effect on her future visits (in terms of Duration of stay allowed), especially since she might visit as early as next year again. Also, is it common for extensions to be rejected? If so, how does that effect her visitor visa. Would appreciate your advice.

If extension is
rejected: 10 year visa is void.
approved: It is possible that officer at port of entry might give trouble next time. It is unlikely that she will be in trouble at POE unless she tries to spend most of her time in US which is not appropriate to do on visitor visa.
