1) What was the petition status of ur friend when he sponsored his mother?
2)what if my petition is expired, can i still go ahead and send sponsor documents on my valid I94?
3) can we have any official link or document where i cam verify it and move on?

my I94 is valid but visa expired and also the petition processing is not yet started.
