    6 months in usa AND 6 months in canada?

    i am an australian wishing to spend a year in north america. can i apply for a 6 month tourist visa in usa and then go to canada as a tourist to explore there for 6 months??? how do i go about doing that??? and can i go back and forth to usa and canada during that one year's time length?
