Last name missing in old passport and changed in renewed but via still visa has FNU

My mother in law is visiting us by 1’st Feb 2020. Her old passport, visa and renewed passport details given below where you can see some changes the way name is given after renewal of passport. She will be visiting USA first time, will there be any issue due to way name mention in renewed passport and Visa?


Expired Passport Details:
Last Name: <missing>
First Name: Suman Saxena

Visa approved for B2 category with name: FNU, Suman Saxena


Now we renewed the passport:
Last Name: Saxena
First Name: Suman

Should not be a big problem.

She might be questioned at POE, ask her to be prepared & answer confidently.

Question could be why she did not got her old passport corrected before applying for visa & why is the passport updated now.

For others, if you make a mistake once in your passport and visa, better live with it for rest of your life - do not change basic details with every renewal of passport.

Luckily the above mentioned name change is not a big issue, but even spelling correction can change your chances of visa/entry in USA.

Sharing my Experience:

My mom does not face any issue at POE as she had following details on new passport. but as you can see new passport has last name as Saxena and Visa approved for B2 category with name:

FNU, Suman Saxena.

Only things I noticed that I-94 has details same like in visa I mean First name as FNU because it was in Visa. So even new passport has last name but visa has FNU you will not face any issue at POE but your I94 will NOT have last name as per your latest passport it will have same name as Visa.
