How to legally prolong a visitor's stay?

Hello friends,

I am interested to know if there is any legal way of extending a visitor's stay in the US beyond 6 months. I am aware of the fact that some people can apply for extension of their stay by 6 months. How easy is it to get an extension? Also, am more interested in knowing if the stay can be extended beyond one year, say for 18 months continously.

I lost my mom and am the only son. So my dad is feeling alone in India. I plan to move back to India by summer of 2006. I was wondering if there is any way by which he can stay with me in the US till that time. He has a multiple entry Visitor visa for 10 years and had visited me for 4 months in 2004.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know of any way to extend it to 18 months.
