Ok i know that this usually depends on case to case basis, but hope someone can answer my question.

I am a Doctor, recently graduated from India. I am Indian by origin and currently in USA on a B1/B2 Visa.

I have been in USA for about a year now. 6 months followed by another 5 months (after a month spent in India) for visit purposes.

Here are a list of questions:
    1. I got a Research Volunteer position in one of the Hospitals at Manhattan, i wasnt sure if i can do that. It is unpaid and is just a volunteer position. So can i work as a volunteer (unpaid) on a b1/b2 visa? Is it legal?

    2. Its the end of my 5 month stay in usa (as on my i-94) and will have to go to India and come back immediately (due to the research thingy) in about 2 weeks, will i face problems when re-entering considering i have been in the US for almost a year now.
If yes, is it ok to show the immigration officer a letter from the director of research of the hospital saying that they need me for the research and that it is a unpaid research position?

    3. I would be applying to a number of Hospitals throughout USA for my postgraduation training in medicine. I expect a few interviews to come my way between sept'10-feb'11. should i mention this to the immi officer so that he could give me the 6 mnths entry that i need?

Your responses would help me make a decision and would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
    Have a great day.

First thing, you can only be on one of B1 or B2. Not B1/B2.

    1. No. illegal.

      ok, I am on a B1 visa.

Are you sure it is not legal to do voluntary work in USA on a B1. I know there are a lot of hospitals out there who officially let us work (unpaid) on a Visitors visa. By work i mean, it is either an observership (where we shadow a doctor at a hospital) or an elective clinical rotation, or a research volunteer, etc.

Infact i know a friend who went to State Univ Of New York for a clinical observership on a B1(visitor) visa just last month!

I dont want to show the immi officer the letter and then get into trouble! So just wanted to be sure its ok
