Visitor visa renewal before expiry

My mother's 10yr visitor visa is expiring in 4 months. She usually visits us for a period of 6 months during any visit. Can we apply for a visa renewal before the current visa has expired? (I understand it is a new visa and not really a renewal). She plans to come visit us soon but is limited by how much time is left on her current visa.
