My mother chose to give up her green card 5 years ago since she had to take care of my grandfather (her father) in India. She plans to live in India long term so this was not an issue. The tricky part is that when she tried to surrender her green card, the US consulate in India did not know what the procedure was. She did send the US Consulate a formal letter of surrender though. Furthermore, given that she has not visited the US in over 5 years, her green card has automatically lapsed. She is now looking to apply for a US tourist visa. The odd thing about the US visa application is that it asks her if she has been to the US. When she says “yes” on the application, she is asked for a Visa number. She has not had a US visa in years since she got her green card in 1981. That old visa number of hers is not accepted in the online application for the visa. How does one work around this? Any input will be super helpful. Thank you in advance.
