Applying for a visa outside of home country

I’m an Australian citizen traveling Europe and I’m hoping to become an Au pair in France so I’ll need to apply for the long stay >90days Au pair visa. I’ll be in Switzerland at the time of applying.

My question is, is it possible to apply for a visa outside of your home country? And if anyone has any info related to this (who to talk to/ where to submit my papers) please let me know!

I’ve emailed the consulate/embassy in Geneva but they haven’t replied yet so please help.
