    URGENT HELP: German transit VISA

My father is returning back to Bangalore via Frankfurt tomorrow. He has a tourist visa to the USA and didnt have to deal with this when he traveled to the US on Oct18, 2004.

I have enough time to drive him to the airport and want to explore the possibility of not having to get a transit visa. Please tell me that I dont need to get transit visa.

    1. Can I take advantage of the grace period?

    2. Academic question: Assuming one were to travel without a transit visa what would happen? WIll the person have to remain on the plane? Guess, the airline wont be too happy ?

OK. I did a lot of reading and this is where it stands regardin the info from consulates

    TRANSIT VISA REQUIRED:

    CHICAGO: NO
    HOUSTON : NO
    NY : NO
    BOSTON : YES

Where did you find all the info about the grace period, I cant find it on any of the web pages on german embassy.(http://www.immihelp.com/experience/r...do?category=28)

I spoke to Lufthansa, what b **** ***! Last week, when I rescheduled the flight they didnt say a thing about transit visa. When I called them this morning, they say that INFORMATION REGARDING TRANSIT VISA WILL BE DISCLOSED ONLY IF THE TRAVELER ASKS FOR IT. What crap!

      German transit visa: Info required

      Hi,
I read on immihelp that your father was travelling via frankfurt. Can you let us know if they asked about the transit visa ? My in-laws are travelling from bangalore to Newark on 23rd. They do not have a transit visa. I am not sure what to do.

      Thx

This transit visa thing is completely new thing. They just started it last week.

We found about Feb 24 from Lufthansa.

If you don't have transit visa, they may not allow you to board the aircraft itself. It is difficult to predict what exactly might happen to different people in this situation as this is so new and everyone is not aware of it.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if someone could answer the following

1: What happens at the bangalore when they show the tickets and their passport does not have a transit visa ? Will they say they can't travel OR they will be allowed to travel to frankfurt & frankfurt will send them back ?

2: I heard that lufthansa is cancelling or rescheduling tickets free of chanrge. Is that true ?

          Thx

            Hi,
I spoke to German consulate in Boston today and they say Transit visa is needed. I asked them about the New Delhi German embassy site that says otherwise(http://germanembassy-india.org/en/wi...a/transit.html) and she says we have to follow what your country german embassy(india)??
Why the hell we would want that crappy visa anyway if we won't get into their country? and whats the point in introducing new non stop flights to Frankfurt? Just for some petty visa fees??

              Beware Beware Beware

              Friends,

In all probability, my father is somewhere mid-air on the northeast atlantic as I type this. Mean, the first step is over. He was allowed to board the aircraft. At check-in time, he was not asked any question regarding transit visa.

Now, I learnt that an INFOSYS friend was sending his wife and daughter on Lufthansa via Frankfurt and they had NO INFO WHATSOEVER as regards a transit visa. With a 28000 ppl company, you would expect well-oiled processes in place and information this far reaching shoul dhave reached the concerned.

As "immihlep" has posted, this is a new thing and we may not learn anything until Feb24.

Lufthansa can be real cheapos when it comes to tickets. When I asked them the question if they would allow me to change the fly date without penalties, they said NO! They said for each date change I would be forced to payup. Luckily, my father flew sooner and I had to cough up only $34. If you happen to fly on the scheduled date and no transit visa, man, you are finished. Lufthansa charges $175 cancellation fees and then re-issue the ticket.

So cutting a long story short, I will come back and write tomorrow evening regarding my father's brief stay in Frankfurt (I pray this happens) or otherwise!

Sanjeev(one who wrote to me), your question will be answered tomorrow. Hope everyone is warned about change fees and cancellation fees, both are different (-:

Father reached Bangalore WITHOUT TRANSIT VISA

Alright, this is breaking news for everyone interested.

My father reached Bangalore safely a couple of hours back.

Now, thing is to see what happens after the GRACE PERIOD...if everyone has a head atop their necks, Lufthansa must not allow people to board...will they?

Is "Grace period" true? I dont know.

My in-laws arrived at Newark airport without any problems yesterday, Feb 23rd. They said that the grace period of Feb 24th was mentioned to them at Bangalore airport. However they had to go through a new interview process at Frankfurt. They were asked few questions about where they are going and why etc.

Anyway - I am glad they made it safely. It makes absolutely no sense for people to apply for another visa (transit visa) just for transit. Will wait and see.

Travelling on GC stamp, not actual GC

My wife is boarding Air India flight from Bombay to Los Angeles in a few hours. It has a stop at Frankfurt. Her green card was approved before she left for India, but it came in mail when she was there. So she is travelling on the 'green card approved' stamp in her passport: the temporary thing that they give before the actual card arrives. I hope those b **** *** in Germany understand the stamp, and that she doesn't have to take the transit visa. What a pain? Will post tomorrow what happened.

                            Update

So finally my wife didn't need to get a transit visa at Frankfurt. She was sitting in the plane only, due to her health condition, and didn't get out. But other fellow travellers who got out, and who were on F1 or L1 visas, also didn't get the transit visa. This was on 2/25/05. ravi72, if your family doesn't get out of the plane, they won't need a transit visa.
