I’m a natural born citizen of the US (Michigan) and I’ll be traveling to Italy later this month. I’m staying with a friend in Italy for about a month and a half, so I know I do not need an Italian visa. But, I’ve been hired to be an au pair to a French family at the end of August for a year. My state doesn’t have a French embassy and the closest French embassy doesn’t have any visa appointments available before I leave for Italy. I have a recent passport and I’ve filled out my French cerfa paperwork, I just need to get some of my documents translated. Would I be able to go to the French embassy in Rome (where I’ll be staying) and apply for a long stay visa there?

Applying for a French visa while residing in Italy involves a few straightforward steps. First, you must determine the type of visa you require based on the purpose of your visit to France, whether it's for tourism, business, study, or family reunification. Once identified, gather the necessary documents, which typically include a completed visa application form, a valid passport, recent passport-sized photographs, proof of accommodation in France, travel itinerary, financial means, and health insurance coverage.
