Does the U.S embassy scan your physical photo?

I passed my visa interview today, but i just wanted to know if they scan your picture before the interview. I applied for the visa before i was photographed for my visa pictures and then i brought physical photos exclusively for the visa with me to the interview. They scanned my passport which had my photo inside and then my fingerprints then i did the interview. Do they need to keep the pictures or do they already scan it when youre at the embassy?
