  • Is this classified as self employment?

I’m currently on a student visa and my previous manager from my home country wants me do work for him (related to the company but I won’t be employed by the company). He wants it to be a service contract where I’ll be like a contractor and paid for just 10 hours a week. The work will be remote while I’m here in the UK for a long term and it’s mostly admin stuff, and payment will be transferred to my bank account in my home country. Overall I know I am allowed to work up to 20 hours so it won’t be exceeding that. But I just wanted to check if this would be classified as being self employed.

It sounds like you have an interesting opportunity! Based on what you’ve described, you could be considered self-employed since you're working as a contractor. Self-employment typically involves providing services under a contract and managing your taxes. Just like sending happy birthday wishes requires attention to detail, it’s essential to carefully review your work arrangement to avoid issues. Since you’re on a student visa, make sure the arrangement complies with visa restrictions.
