  • How to modify appointment at the Chennai consulate to earlier date

    Hi,
I looked for an appointment for a b2 visa for my mom early in March and got the appointment for May 26th. This was the earliest appointment available.
It was at the Chennai consulate. I didn't look for an interpreter as my mom is conversant with English, though not fluent. Also, I figured getting appointments in english without interpreter would be easier.
From May 26th I was able to bump up the appointment to March 24th(!!!) by using the modify/cancel option on the ttsvisas website.
Just like you, I couldn't see any appointments when I logged in to the ttsvisas website and tried the modify/cancel appointment link. Sometimes I would see an earlier appointment, but by the time I clicked on the date, it would no longer exist. This is because there's tons of people just like you and me looking to "bump up" appointments. I also heard that there are agents who block dummy appointments and modify them for money. I'm not sure how far this is true.
I was told by a friend that new appointments are available every certain interval of time. (Lets call this a server refresh). He said the website shows new appointments every half an hour. He was wrong.
I sat for a day and timed the "server refresh".
I found that the server refreshes every 10 minutes. I sync-ed my watch with this.
As anal as this sounds, it paid off!
The maximum number of appointments were shown exactly after every 10 minutes. By 10 minutes and 5 seconds most of the early appointments were gone.
For example by my time, I found that the maximum appointments between 4 and 5 p.m. were at 4:10:10, 4:20:10 etc. This was by my watch. Do some research yourself.
You have a window of 2-3 seconds to modify your appointment. The idea is to get to the calendar page of the modify/cancel appointment ,exactly every 10 minutes.
    1) (PLEASE!)Be VERY VERY careful you don't accidentally click on a date later than the one you've already got. There's like four or five lines of months and days, and its easy to get confused.
    2) I used a high speed connection, cable in my case. If you're really desperate and in the US, get cable. If your company has good connection speeds, try it at work. I wouldn't recommend this using dial up. You need a good connection that can take you to the next page in a second or two at most.
    3) Try a few practice runs, without actually changing the date.
    4) Set the options on your explorer so that the box where you have to enter the passport number and the receipt number automatically stores the earlier entries. This helps as you don't have to keep entering the passport number and receipt number each time. Also helps in cutting time to reach the calendar page.
    5) You could also try opening multiple windows but it only helps if you have a kickass connection. It might actually slow you down if your connection is not too good.

When I tried this, I was able to bump up my appointment by two months in a matter of 2-3 days. I think I did this in phases, like bumping it back by a week or two at a time. Do not be disappointed if you are unable to see any cancellations. Someone out there IS modifying his/her date to an earlier slot, and his/her slot IS going to be available.
I don't know the "server refresh" time right now. Please time it and post it here so others can benefit from it.
I am posting this info here because I heard of agents making money from this process, while people who actually need an earlier slot are missing out.
Now, that said, I do not give any guarantees that this will work. But if it helps you, good for you. It worked for me.

        Ouster! Excelent information.

I am trying to sync-up my clock with the server refresh. But I couln't do it yet.I am trying for it for the past 7 to 10 days(because it allows only five attempts a day). Do you still have your clock syncup with server refresh?

http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java : is the official us eastern standard time. If you can post your clock time and corresponding official clock time that would be helpfull to all of us. (so we all set our clock based on the difference)

        Thanks

          est

Dude, when I tried from work, I found that the server would refresh at exactly every 10 minutes. i.e. I needed to be at the calendar page at the 1st or the 2nd second after every 10 minutes by my watch. Now I'm unable to view your applet/page as I'm behind a firewall. Gimme a day. I'll have to check this from home, time my 15 buck casio and post it here, maybe later this evening or tomorrow.

It still refreshes every 10 min...but..the catch is tht u have to wait till all the present slots are taken. Only when the calender goes empty....the consulate releases all the other open slots, and thts when u get to grab some early ones.

There are still some left in Aug...so guess u have to wait till they are all taken. The best times I've found to try are like twice between 1:30pm - 2:30 pm & 9:30 am - 11:00 am IST.

Good Luck ppl..before the consulate knows tht ppl are getting smarter this way..and figures out a way to block this trick They are making so many changes already.

              time

              Hey Josmith,
My watch is six seconds ahead of the time thats on the website. And by my watch the refresh occurred 10 seconds after the 10th minute, so by the time on the website, the refresh should occur 4 seconds after the 10th minute. I might be off by a couple of seconds, unfortunately, as my watch seems to be losing time.
I did the bumping up process some time at the beginning of March/end of Feb. At that time, the server would refresh exactly at 4:10:10, 4:20:10 etc. I don't know if this entire window has changed or not. It would be helpful to others if anyone could find this out.
Thanks, Divyasri for posting the update. I'm sure a lot of people will benefit from it. I noticed that you'd posted what I found a couple of weeks earlier. Unfortunately is was lost in the depths of the forum. Could you please elaborate on what you mean by the new requirement to have all the slots taken?
I see that since I tried the process, they've added a new field, in the modify/cancel appointment page. You now have to type in an extra word that appears on the screen. I guess this eliminates anyone trying to do what I did, programmatically.
Also, when I tried it, I didn't see any upper limit on the number of times a day one could modify appointments. You might want to check if this limit applies to actually modifying the appointment against just checking to see if there are available appointments. What I mean is there might be a limit to the number of times you actually click on an earlier date, but there might not be a limit on the number of times you can actually get to the calendar page.
And Josmith, you should remember that there might be more appointments available for interviews in English than in Tamil.
Also, I noticed that this post has been viewed 95 times already, so you now have a lot more people hitting the server at the same time.
Its gonna be interesting to see the load the server can take.
              Anyways, best of luck dude.

                Thanks

                Ouster,

Thanks for your reply and posting your clock time. I will try today to bump up the date. As divyasri said as of now the system allows only five attempts to go to the calender page per day.

I think..when they say one can modify an apptmt five days a day...it actually literally means tht u can opt a change in date five times a day. So...perhaps trying to get to the calender page does not have a limit.

I shall go n check back n c wht I wrote on my earlier post ref new requirements.

I did not find anything I've posted in those exact words @ Ouster, but, I think u r referring to whn I said tht the consulate releases all the early apptmt dates available..only after the present calender slots are all taken in full.

I think (again), tht if there are already some apptmt dates available on the present calender...like for example if u try now u can still find some dates flashing blue in August, .... then the consulate waits till all those slots are taken. When the calender goes empty, ppl tryin to make fresh apptmts obviously are frustrated looking at the blank page. It is then I believe that the consulate is forced to release all those other slots (cancelled/held back whtevr).

So, it is good to wait till the calender goes empty for Aug, and then try for the early apptmts. The chances wud be more then according to wht I've observed.

And like I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, u can also change the time of ur apptmt, if u r lucky enough in finding multiple slots on the same date. For ppl travelling from out of state, it is of great help. It did help my parents a lot atleast.

                    *~*
