To show as a sponsor or not to show

My parents would be visiting me this summer. They are in the process of applying for their Visa. I had a question here, they would be traveling as self sponsored but staying with me so do i need to send them an invitation letter for staying with me ? or does that complicate situation ?

They will have to answer about your whereabouts and status in US in their application. An informal letter stating how they can stay with you will be helpful.
