Tourist to Student Visa

My friend entered the U.S. from U.K. as a tourist. She was given an allowed 3 months stay. She now wants to extend the stay another 3 months. Can she do that? And what if she wants to change her stay to that os a student?

Please advice..

Did he enter on the tourist visa or on VWP?
