Please help Visa status change required.

Hi ,
I am on L2 visa,my wife being on L1.Its been a year here in US.Now her company wants her to be back in India.I need to be in US for another couple of months to finish off exams.
I have a valid B1/B2 visa as well.
My Question :
1) Can i change my visa status from L2 to B1/B2 without going back to India.
2) I heard people go to CAnada or Mexico to get visa status changed.
Someone please help.I am in desperate need of an answer asap.

If the person on L1 is not in the U.S., the dependent can't remain in the U.S. on L2.

You can either apply for change of status to B1/B2.
Or you can go out of the U.S. and enter the U.S. on B1/B2 using the B1/B2 visa that you have.
