Passport Renewal on B visa

Is there any provision to renew Indian passport when visiting on a tourist visa if any emergency arises? We are planning for a trip now as we have a valid passport for 8 more months, giving us enough time to complete 6 months trip to the US. But we are wondering if we could we get passport extension in the US in an emergent situation like illness etc.
Also will there be any issues at the Port of entry as the passport is going to expire soon?

Yes, Indian embassies and consulates can in principle renew passports in such situations. There will not be any problem at entry.
