Mother got Visa but Dad got 221g letter. Need help

Hi,

My Mom and dad went for US visitor visa interview in New Delhi. VO did not check any document. My mom got the visa but they gave 221g letter to my dad. They kept his passport and told him that his case needs more verification and it will take 14-15 days. What should we do? Is it good if they kept the passport? What is this 221g letter.
