Visa interview before expiration date

My mom's US Vistor's Visa is expiring in July 2012. We did not realize that and ended up paying Visa fee in Oct 2010. Is it ok to attend Visa interview now before Visa expiration date, will she get extension?

We can't wait any longer to attend the interview as Visa fee we paid last year will expire in another month. Appreciate your assistance.
