Is it true that applying for a B2 visa as a prospective student is dangerous?

People have told me that there is a good chance of refusal. However, in my case I need to do that since I have to visit s few campuses in order to decide which one would be best for me...

It is not dangerous in general. But you may be questioned a lot about exactly which campuses you wish to visit and what you hope to learn from the visits in making decision of studying. Be well prepared regarding your purpose of visit and source of funds.
