Can I mention surname with two spellings in Indian Passport?

Dear Immihelp,
I'm planning to apply for passport to my mother. But me and my brother uses two different spellings for the same surname. I couldn't decide which surname should I mention for my mother's passport.
(here I'm using anonymous names as example)
1. My name on my passport and Date of Birth certificate: Meghana Maini
2. My mother's name on my Passport and Date of Birth certificate : Maini Anjali
3. My Father's name on my Passport and Date of Birth certificate : Maini Ashok

Where as My Brother uses " Mayni" as surname.
1.My brother name on his 10th certificate and Date of birth certificate: Krishna Mayni

My brother and mother both are planning to apply for passport. If my mother prefers "Mayni"....in future if I want to sponsor her, it will be a problem.....if she prefers "Maini"....my brother face problem to sponsor her.

Can we mention my mother name like "Mayini (Maini) Anjali " or " Mayini Anjali (or) Maini Anjali" in passport? I mean to say can we mention both spellings of surname while applying for Indian. passport? Do they accept it?

Please suggest me as early as possible...its very urgent......

You mention her last name as per what really is her last name, as per all of her other documents like marriage certificate, birth certificate, school certificate etc.
