No, it does not work like that.

    Your spouse can apply to join you on her own but the outcome depends on ;

*why you would like your spouse to come
*what is the purpose of your current visit in US and what is your occupation at home ,
*how long have you been in US and how much more to go
*Do you have any children at home your spouse will be leaving behind?
*Is your spouse working or stay-home?

In that case, if one of our relatives in the US sponsors her, can she apply for visitor visa because she cannot sponsor on her owm. She works in India but her salary may not be sufficient to sponsor herself.
Also me being in the US will harm her chances of getting visa?

Your being in US will definitely affect her application.
Who is the relative and if you can post more info I requested.

          Thanks for the prompt reply!

The relative is her cousine who is on H1 for last 8 years in the US. But being cousin, there is no proof of that.

When you say it will affect you mean it will harm or assist?

Here is more information you needed:

*why you would like your spouse to come
          - Both of us can visit some tourist places in the US. I am in Florida so we can visit, Miami, Orlando etc

*what is the purpose of your current visit in US and what is your occupation at home ,
          - I am here for training and knowledge transfer. I work as Tech Lead in a software firm

*how long have you been in US and how much more to go
          - I am here since last 3 weeks and would be here for couple of more months. But my wife will be here for a 3-4 weeks only.

*Do you have any children at home your spouse will be leaving behind?
          - No children but she is working and will be joining her duties back once back from the US.

*Is your spouse working or stay-home?
          - She is working as a lecturer in a management college.

            Ok. great.
It helps to know the background to get a clear picture.

No need to involve the cousin.

She can apply with a leave cum employment cum salary letter from her employer
with a copy of your visa , saying that she wants to join you for the remainder of your stay
as your business work is done and both of you want to do some sightseeing.

She can show that both of you have enough income to spend for the trip. She must have a good figure of the combined income to say to the officer when asked. Carry proof of both your incomes ( IT return/salary slip).

Another question they will ask of your spouse is , "why now?' "why did you not accompnay him?" You can think of the answer.

            Good luck.

              Thanks for the reply!

In that case, should I send a sponsor letter or there is no need for the sponsor letter at all? What about the invitation letter? Should I send the invitation letter?

You could write a small letter in the name of the officer , explaining everything and send it to your spouse.
Your passport and visa copy with US entry stamp will also be required..

                    I had another question.
We do not have a marriage certificate. Will they accept marriage affidavit?
