  • B2 Visa got rejected after current occupation was asked

I sponsor my father to attend my graduation ceremony end of May and i got invitation letter from the school. My father is retired but he still rent out houses and collecting rent every month. He had interview on March 26th but got rejected.

Officer: why are you going to the US?
    My dad: visit my son
Officer: what is your son doing?
My dad: he is working at xyz company
    Officer: who sponsor you?
My dad: my son and he handed my bank statement ....
    Officer: what are you doing?
    My dad: retired
Officer: typed something in the computer and said he couldn't issue him a visa. He got rejected under Section 214(b).

I believe this is my mistake that put his current occupation as 'RETIRED'. I plan to reapply for my dad again in April. Can I change his occupation to 'PROPERTY OWNER' in new DS-160? Will they ask why his occupation is changed?

    Yes, they will surely ask.

What is his income per month from all sources?
Are there any other children at home country with him?
    Your mother?

So it is ok to change occupation when fill out new DS-160? Can he said he didn't consider renting out houses an occupation previously?

NO, I did not mean that.
Actually renting out homes is not an occupation.

        So you can't change it.

I asked his income because if he is earning a lot through rent and pension, he can show spending his own money rather than your sponsorship.

Thanks. He is collecting only about $400 per month and he is widower. I have 2 sisters and they are married. And they all are living with my father.

I am sorry chances are high for denial again because he has no ties to home
( no wife, no single children, no job/business and low income)

Maybe he can make a list of all his properties and their market value by an assessor .
If it is high value, he can show it on next attempt as a tie and stress that he only wants to visit US .

Or if you really want to bring him to US you should think about other possible visa categories, not visitor visa.
