  • Visa rejection :(

    Hello all,

I applied for a visitors visa for a very short visit to the US (2-weeks tops). I said I would be visiting my sis-in-law who lives in x state, and then doing a week-long workshop in another state. I had all the details of my sis-in-law's status, an invitation letter from the place I would be doing the course (I had prepaid for it as well), financial details saying my trip was sponsored by my father (10L in an FD and 2-3L in a bank account), information about my financial details and all.

However, the interviewer didn't even look at any of these documents. All she asked me was:
what I'm visiting for, where I'll be going, my annual income, my husband's annual income (4 and 8L p.a.), and details regarding the workshop (going to see a pretty famous author who'll teach a 5day course).

That's all she asked, before saying my socioeconomic ties weren't strong enough and I got rejected. Unfortunatley, I mentioned I'm a freelancer, which might have been a red flag for her.

I have absolutely no intention of migrating to the US: I live here with my husband and cats (4!). I also run a local group for which i organize meetings monthly. Is there any way i can show these last 2 things on paper or in the interview, to help me in my reapplication?

    Any help will be appreciated
    Thanks a ton...

Mainly you were denied not because you are a freelancer but the whole picture of your presentation did not fit into a natural scheme of things.

Going all the way to US , just for 2 weeks and for a 5 day course, when you personally are not doing well financially in your career. NO OFFENCE. and asking your dad to fund the trip when you are married yourself. And showing your sis-in-lw is there in US.( officer thinks someone to help you settle down in US).

When that happens they think you are a potential immigrant ( even if you are actually not).
    .

    You can plan for future, please post ;
*Have you attended any workshops outside India?
*this sis - in-law in US; Is she your brother's wife or your husband's sis?
    *What is her visa status?
*Have you ever travelled to any foreign country before?
*What does your husband do and doesn't he want to travel?
*Do you people have other sources of income , property, rental?

      Thanks for your inputs.

Yes, I actually wanted to go only for the 5-day course, and maybe to see the sights of the USA. My savings could have funded the trip since it was only for 2 weeks, but since my dad's savings were much higher, and paperwork was in order, I showed that instead. Is it unusual to go for such a short vacation?

While in the interview, I said I would be visiting with my husband, he would not have actually accompanied me, since this was a personal interest trip for me, and we had no intention of visiting sis-in-law. The plan was that my sis-in law would show me around the city and we will travel back to india together (she would have coincided her visit to India with mine), but we thought that it would be safe to say we are visiting her as a couple (and that I am dependent on my husband for the visit) to show ties.

no, this would have been my first ever trip outside India

*this sis - in-law in US; Is she your brother's wife or your husband's sis?
      my husband's sis

      *What is her visa status?
      H1B

*Have you ever travelled to any foreign country before?
      Never

*What does your husband do and doesn't he want to travel?
He has a fulltime job in an la based company, and he already has a visa but did not want to travel right now.

*Do you people have other sources of income , property, rental?
we have a property worth 50 lakhs (at the time of purchase 2 years back, currently it would be worth more) I have other sources of income but it is not significant, plus it is not all on paper (hence the parent sponsor help).

Once again, like I said before I have pets and have a local group meeting that I organize at least once monthly. Is there anyway of showing this on paper?

          Sitara1,

Like I said, before, the whole picture has to sound natural. Your main purpose was a 5 day course
which was unnatural in the light of the distance you are traveling and your fledgeling career.

You had a much better opiton, since your husband had a visa already.
You could have applied when your husband was actually going on his business trip .
Purpose ; accompanying my husband on his business trip.

No mention of a study course, no mention of sis- in-law.
          And it perfectly sounds natural.

You can wait till your husband plans a business trip and you can apply then.
